Philip Frey: Chasing the Light

Artist Reception: Wednesday, June 15, 5–7pm

As Frey’s observation of light has become more acute, his subject has become fragmented, more abstract. The fragmentation can be traced back to the influence of noted Maine painter Alan Bray with whom Frey studied briefly. Bray likes to deconstruct his subject. In that vein, Frey went on to analyze how light strikes an object—a rock, a book, or lobster traps piled on a dock—how light reveals the intricate geometric shapes and patterns, and how this phenomenon informs the basis of his compositions. He masterfully balances the duality of realism and abstraction. — Karin Wilkes, excerpt from the catalog
