Lilian Day Thorpe Biography

Lilian Day Thorpe (b. 1991) creates photomontages that explore the contradiction of using a digital medium to evoke tangible, analog sensitivities. Inspired by her love of, and need for, quietness, these serene fictional landscapes offer a respite from the information age and the chaos of modern-day life.

Thorpe’s work is influenced by the beautiful rural landscapes of two northern regions: Maine where she was raised, and Iceland where she was awarded a residency in 2014. Thorpe spent a month living and working in a farmhouse in the small town of Laugarvatn. Here she developed her first series of photomontages.

Thorpe creates her montages in Photoshop from her own film photography, which are then printed on a Hahnemühle photo rag paper. The result appears both painterly and photographic. Thorpe earned a BFA in Photography, and a MS in the History of Art and Design, from Pratt Institute.
