Holly Meade (1956–2013) Biography

Holly Meade (1956–2013) is an acclaimed printmaker and award-winning children’s book author and illustrator. Meade’s lively woodblock prints are full of wit and charm, exploring everyday life, baking cookies or an afternoon nap, or her humorous personification of animals. She illustrated more than thirty children’s books, and her illustrations for Hush!: A Thai Lullaby (Melanie Kroupa/Orchard Books, 1996) by Minfong Ho won a 1997 Caldecott Honor for illustration; and John Willy and Freddy McGee (Marshall Cavendish, 1998), for which she was named an honoree for the Charlotte Zolotow Award for Creative Writing.

Meade earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1978. She went on to explore a variety of artistic mediums, including drawing, collage, printmaking, basket making, and fabric design. Though she enjoyed a career as an independent artist, beginning in 1992, she brought much to the world of children’s books, which she called “the other focus of my work life.” Meade began making woodblock prints in 2002, after a workshop with printmaker Hester Stinnett at the Haystack Mountain School. For many years, she lived and worked in Sedgwick, Maine, where she maintained a printing studio.

Meade’s woodblock prints are in numerous collection including the Portland Museum of Art. Her prints are also featured in many of her more recent picture books such as David Elliott’s series On the Farm (Candlewick, 2008), In the Wild (2010) and In the Sea (2012).
