SOL INVICTUS The Return of Light
“Sol, grant me your sun crown,
those radiant spokes, and lend me
your horse-drawn chariot that I may
harness the sky
for I have survived
the longest night of the year
and unlike you,
I am conquered, vincible.”
— Hollie Adams excerpt from “Sun Salutations: A Poem for Sol Invictus”

Courthouse Gallery Fine Art is pleased to present Sol Invictus: The Return of Light, a group show celebrating the winter solstice through visual art and poetry. The exhibition brings together twenty-five artists and thirteen poets to interpret a theme inspired by Sol Invictus, a Roman sun god whose name translates to “Unconquered Sun.” In ancient times the winter solstice marked the end of a mythical struggle between dark and light forces. On the longest night of the year, the idea of an “unconquered sun” is compelling and evocative.
“See how everything
we have made gathers
the light inside itself
and overflows? A blessing.”
— Stuart Kestenbaum excerpt from “Holding The Light”
