Alison Rector: Hours of the Day
Alison Rector spent the past two years on the Blue Hill Peninsula exploring how summer light shifts and changes. Many of the paintings in the show are 10 x 10-inch interiors looking out at scenes of Eggemoggin Reach, Stonington, Brooksville, Blue Hill, Newbury Neck, and Bayside.
The Gallery hosted a Zoom Talk, Rector, who was joined by artist Linden Frederick for an engaging conversation between two artists. The talk was recorded and you can view it below.
Rector says “Linden is a masterful painter, a colleague and friend.” In the mid-1990’s, she studied painting with Frederick for several years in his studio where they met regularly to discuss color theory, grey scale values, composition and paint handling. Frederick has been living and painting in Maine for thirty years. Although he is represented by Forum Gallery in NYC, most of his work is based on small town scenes of Maine at dusk or night.
Rector holds a BA in painting from Brown University. She has been featured in Art New England, The Gettysburg Review, Maine Home + Design, and Carl Little’s book More Paintings of Maine. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including several biennials at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, and the 2003 biennial at the Portland Museum of Art. The Ogunquit Museum of American Art featured her work in a 2017 exhibition “The Value of Thought” and purchased a painting for their collection.
