Ridge Sentinels, watercolor

Ellen Church bio resume press

Bass Harbor is my year round home and it is here on Mt. Desert Island where I find endless inspiration for my work. The light along the coast is unbelievably exciting. There is an intensity and vastness of space by the sea with constantly changing weather and a wonderful variety in the seasons. My love of nature runs deep within and because of this I paint landscapes. I love painting with watercolors. Watercolor is the perfect medium for expressing the essence of the Maine coast. It is natural, fluid, unpredictable, and luminous. The paint is wonderfully versatile which allows it to be applied with rich intensity or a delicate tone. Generally, my paintings are representational although I will often abstract the forms to emphasize a spiritual element that I particularly feel in a scene. I am a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society.
